Build a sit-stand desk for a home studio for under €150 💸

Working in audio, whether for composition, sound design, mixing, or production, means spending very long hours in the same position. And when, like me, you have been suffering from back pain for over 8 years, it becomes urgent to rethink your workspace. It is with this in mind that I built my motorized sit-stand desk in my home studio, simple, stable... and above all, economical.

En position assise classique, le réglage de hauteur permet d'obtenir un position parfaitement adaptée.

What is a motorized sit-stand desk for the home studio? ⚙️

A sit-stand desk allows for easy adjustment of the tabletop height to alternate between several positions throughout the day:

  • Standing 🧍En position debout : on peut alterner entre posture tonique ou plus relâchée, selon les moments de la journée.

  • Sitting on a chair 🪑

  • Sitting on a ball 🏐

This allows for varying postures and reducing tension associated with prolonged static positions. The mechanism can be motorized or manual, and the main benefit is having a desk always at the right height, regardless of your position.

An idea born thanks to the community 🎧

It was following a discussion on the Game Audio France Discord about chairs and desks that the idea really took root. A big thank you to Wilfried Nass for recommending the brand to me. SongMics that I do not

I didn't know about it and it offers motorized bases at very reasonable prices. I was lucky to come across a model on sale for €87 (instead of €168).

The equipment used 🧰

Here is what I have chosen to build my setup:

  • Motorized base SongMics (1 motor)  : 87 €

  • Main plateau ( Weldom) : 15,95 €

  • Small elevated stand for screens (also available at Weldom): €10

  • Ikea legs retrieved from a previous assembly. Here is the reference. )

  • Clamping collars, screws and washers, sandpaper: approx. €20

  • Screw-mounted power strip under the desk for better cable management: approx. €10

Total: approximately €140

The assembly 🔩

  • L'installation de la base a été très facile.

  • J'ai été amené à poncer et arrondir les angles du plateau principal (en raison du matériau de base).

  • The small elevated tray is secured with Ikea legs, a screw, and a clamp.

  • For cable management, I used extensions, cable ties, and screwed the power strip under the tabletop.

  • It's a homemade assembly, but the result is very stable, even in a high position.

The first effects on my posture 🧍‍♂️🪑

I already feel improvements in my back pain. Being able to work standing up regularly is a real plus. But above all, even when sitting, the comfort is better because the desk is finally at the right height – which is rarely the case with a fixed desk and a standard chair.

Conclusion: an accessible and useful office 👍

For €150, I finally have a modular, comfortable desk that suits my body. Even though the motor may not last for years, it will be more than enough to validate the health benefits before possibly investing in a higher-end model one day.
