Before becoming a freelance sound designer and composer for video games, I was a producer for artists. My role involved creating a coherent musical universe: arrangements, artistic direction, recording, overseeing takes, and then mixing.

It is in this context that I crossed paths with Paul Simon - not the one from Garfunkel, but a talented singer-songwriter from my region.

A story of humans

Our worlds truly intersected in 2021. Although we had met before, this time I had the opportunity to produce his entire debut album, Fallait Bien. A debut album comes with real responsibility: it requires defining a sound universe, an artistic direction, and making strong choices - always in close collaboration with the artist.

Like in a video game project, everything starts with a human encounter. Moments of discussions, sometimes off-topic, that allow for a better understanding of the person in front of you. And also, inevitably, differing viewpoints. With Paul, our musical universes were very different, which could be a hindrance. Music remains an abstract art: without a common language, communication can quickly become complicated.

Find an anchor point:

I have never sought to impose my choices. Above all, I want to understand what the artist wishes to express, their deep intention. When the musical foundations differ, it is necessary to find an anchor point: a common reference, even if distant, that serves as a bridge between two universes. In our case, it was the Beatles who paved the way.

It was a real revelation: I was able to trace the thread of his influences, everything became clear and coherent. And above all, I knew that I would be able to bring out my Beatles Bass and my most beautiful pick - which, of course, made me very happy.

This collaboration also allowed me to work with my brother Vivien, who created hybrid drum parts to add more depth to Paul's universe. A true team effort, sometimes challenging to implement, but extremely rewarding.

A rich exchange of insights:

Beyond the production of the album, this "click" primarily unlocked our communication. We were able to understand each other's worlds and enrich one another. Over time, his music became familiar to me. I was able to propose ideas, adjust sound textures, and build coherence between his world and mine. This experience has been pivotal in my journey.

She reminded me of an essential truth of the profession - whether in music production, composition, or sound design for video games: What matters most are the people we work with.

Olivier Derivière told me recently:

"If you have to work with a new team, take your car and go meet the people behind the project."

A simple sentence, but one that perfectly summarizes the essence of our professions.

Toujours obligé de faire la grimace ^^

Do things seriously, without taking oneself too seriously. :)
